Buying into an ecosystem, choosing the correct technology is key to productivity

Nowadays majority of users are familiar with the newer way to collect information and consume the digital world. People like myself have various social media profiles on multiple platforms and networks, and consume mass amounts of content daily. As the world continues to evolve, the basic principals and ways to market and learn stay the same, however the method of consuming it and learning are different. In the new age of technology people no longer seek the information as society has created platforms for the information to be personalized and also feed directly to you. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? As this new way to consume media and information good for you or is the historic way still the best way?

As studies show, discovery is a key part of learning and the path of discovery is a part of the way we retain information and also a force of why we keep digging. Learning and discovery hasn't changed since the beginning of time, however how and what we discover has changed for the digital age. Even if you have adapted the new way of consuming media, is there a better way or a best practice to how to consume media? And my answer is YES!!! Yes there is!

While the younger generation does not hesitate to spend energy and time into developing something, the more mature generation is always cautious of spending time and resources because the older we become, the harder it is to understand the newer way of thinking and doing. Most of all the biggest difference is the younger generation sees time and energy as something that isn't monetary, while the more mature work force sees this as a valuable resource that is limited.

So now, lets get into the meat and potatoes, being this is a holiday weekend and Thanksgiving is today. You don't want to buy into every ecosystem and way of doing things, you just want to be in the one you believe fits right for you, or generally where the majority of your target market resides on. An ecosystem is a set of hardware and software that powers how you not only consume information and media, but also how you build and create from it. Generally Google and Apple are competing for your way of doing things, as Google+ Facebook, Twitter and Linkdin are also trying to get you to build your presence on their platform. Buying into the hardware to do this as well as the software will change you abilities of how you perform these tasks as Google is a more open platform and can be used by multiple devices, Apple is a smoother and faster way of doing the same thing, but constrains your creativity.

As the work place and home place are merging more and more and the lines are becoming blurred constantly, the way your social media architecture is setup, informative media and casual media is structured is key to maximizing not only productivity but also how you consume you content is important. iOS and Yosemite bases its design and build on the premise that all your devices are synced, information is pushed and pulled from and into different devices and as long as you are within Apples world, life is grand. However the iOS candy land is sweet and enticing, however the Andriod platform is a more universal and powerful ecosystem to buy into. As the tools may not be as shiny, the outreach and the power of them are far greater. Google has more vehicles that are far more developed, complete and refined, and the way we consume it becomes largely based on do we care about presentation or function. Google has more function than OSX/iOS however when you eat a burger, does the Five Guys approach of a foil wrapped burger irritate you, or do you prefer the sit down Burger, presented on a plate?

How you answer that question is definitely up to you and concludes the question in my opinion. As each ecosystem is its own school of thought, not every individual operates the same. We do not always learn the same way, the same rate and flourish similarly. So finding the platform that aligns with your thinking and the way you do things are the key to productivity. If you have complex systems, gigantic excel spread sheets, and can skin a cat 15 ways, iOS is not for you. However if you believe that things should be simple and uniform and just want things to work… if you consider value and a different way of doing things is a better way, consider Android. While designing is based on doing things and how to do it, what drives and will conclude this questions is what experience do we want when doing this?

In todays world, there is a never ending chase to always evolve the way we do things. Not because we like change to have change, but some of us embrace change for all of the doors and potential that comes with change.
